Three Black Puddings, a Twenty-Foot Plinth and a Stack of Yorkshire Puddings Decide a World Title in Ramsbottom Next Month

The World Black Pudding Throwing Championships are held on the second Sunday of September outside a pub on Bridge Street. The organisers insist the puddings are hurled, not thrown.

The World Black Pudding Throwing Championships are contested outside The Oaks pub on Bridge Street in Ramsbottom, Greater Manchester, on the second Sunday of September, which in 2026 is 13 September. Competitors are given three black puddings and must knock as many Yorkshire puddings as possible off a twenty-foot plinth.

The format

Element Detail
Ammunition Three black puddings per competitor
Target A stack of Yorkshire puddings on a 20 ft plinth
Technique Underhand only
Scoring Yorkshire puddings dislodged
Venue Outside The Oaks, Bridge Street, Ramsbottom
Proceeds Local good causes

Hurling, not throwing

The organisers are firm that the correct verb is hurling, on the technical grounds that the pudding is delivered underhand rather than overhand. It sounds like pedantry and it is not: the underhand restriction is the entire competitive constraint. Remove it and the event becomes a throwing contest that the strongest competitor wins. Keep it and the whole thing turns on trajectory, release point and how a dense cylindrical object behaves in the air, which is why the same names keep coming back.

Recent champions

Year Champion
2025 Ged Flanagan (ENG)
2024 Harry Ogden (ENG)
2023 Stu Pearson (ENG)
2022 Stuart Hubbart (ENG)
2021 Andrew Ferrier (ENG)

Repeat winners are rare. Huseyin Ozluk of Turkey won in 2009 and 2013, and Andrew Ferrier in 2018 and 2021, which makes them two of the few names on the roll of honour more than once.
