Phichit Has Been Racing Longboats on the Nan River Since the Twenty-Eighth of August and Finishes on Sunday

Phichit's longboat races run from 28 August to 6 September on the Nan River at Wat Tha Luang, in the lower north of Thailand. Sunday is the last day.

The prize is the Royal Cup, bestowed by the King, which places the event in a tier of Thai competition where the trophy carries more weight than the purse.

Longboat racing is among the oldest organised sports in Thailand, traceable to the Ayutthaya period, when it functioned both as royal ceremony and as inter-village competition. It has never fully separated into either. The races are still held at temples, still scheduled around the end of Buddhist Lent, and still organised around communities rather than clubs.

The timing is not sentimental. Races are held when the river is high enough after the rains to take a boat of that length safely, which in practice means from late August through November across the various provinces that hold them. Phichit is one of the earlier fixtures in that calendar.

A racing longboat is a narrow hull carrying a large crew paddling in unison, and the sport's technical demand is synchronisation rather than raw power. A crew half a beat out of time slows the hull, and over a straight sprint on a river that punishes a wandering line, that is usually the whole race.

The watching arrangements have not changed much either. Spectators sit on the riverbank, food stalls run behind them, and local OTOP producers sell alongside. It is a village festival that happens to contain a national sport, which is roughly the same description that fits most of the traditional events on this calendar.
