Antonelli Started Nineteenth at Monza and Won, the First Italian to Do It There Since 1966
Kimi Antonelli took his seventh win of the season on Sunday. He leads the championship by 66 points with the year running down.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on Sunday 6 September, having started nineteenth on the grid after power unit penalties. He covered the 53 laps in 1:51:15.281.
George Russell finished second for Mercedes, 3.857 seconds back, and Max Verstappen was third at 14.718. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri took fourth and fifth for McLaren, split by two tenths, and Lewis Hamilton was sixth for Ferrari.
No Italian had won at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966, which is a gap of sixty years.
The race turned twice. Charles Leclerc went off on the second lap at the exit of the Parabolica and hit the barrier side on, and the safety car became a red flag; he climbed out winded but unhurt. Later a virtual safety car for Lance Stroll's stopped Aston Martin let Antonelli and Verstappen take fresh mediums while Russell stayed out on worn hards. Antonelli passed him for the lead on lap 50 of 53.
That is Antonelli's seventh win of the season. He has 267 points to Russell's 201, with Hamilton on 191, Norris on 171, Leclerc on 155 and Verstappen on 127.
Antonelli is twenty. Italy has not had a Formula One world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
