MPL MY S18: Team Vamos sweep Selangor Red Giants 2-0 as three teams tie at the top before final weekend
Vamos beat SRG 2-0 to join Team Rey and SRG on 10-3, while Invictus Gaming beat Team Flash 2-0 and the race for sixth place goes to the final weekend.
Team Vamos swept defending champions Selangor Red Giants 2-0 on Friday, 16 October, leaving three teams level at the top of MPL Malaysia Season 18 with one week of the regular season left. Selangor Red Giants (SRG), Team Rey and Team Vamos all now have 10 wins and three defeats. Earlier on Friday, Invictus Gaming beat Team Flash 2-0, which leaves Flash needing results to go their way in the race for the last playoff place.
Vamos dominate the defending champions
Vamos needed only about 26 minutes of game time to beat the team that beat them 4-0 in the Season 17 grand final. They won the first game in 13 minutes 17 seconds and the second in 12 minutes 57 seconds. According to Liquipedia's match record, Error 404 was named MVP.
The sweep cut into SRG's game-difference lead, which matters because the regular-season table is decided first on match wins and then on game difference. SRG have won 22 games and lost eight (+14), Team Rey are on 21-9 (+12) and Vamos are on 21-12 (+9).
Invictus Gaming hurt Flash's hopes
In the opening match on Friday, Invictus Gaming beat Team Flash in two games that lasted 25 minutes 2 seconds and 12 minutes 5 seconds. Rezza started for IG in place of Atannn, and Treacky was named MVP. The result took IG to a 7-6 record. No team below them can catch them, so they will finish in the top five.
Flash dropped to 4-9 and have one match left. Bigetron MY by Vitality are 5-7 with two to play.
Standings after Friday
| Pos | Team | W-L | Games |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Selangor Red Giants | 10-3 | 22-8 |
| 2 | Team Rey | 10-3 | 21-9 |
| 3 | Team Vamos | 10-3 | 21-12 |
| 4 | Invictus Gaming | 7-6 | 17-15 |
| 5 | Bigetron MY by Vitality | 5-7 | 14-17 |
| 6 | Team Flash | 4-9 | 11-18 |
| 7 | RRQ Tora | 3-10 | 11-22 |
| 8 | AC Esports | 2-10 | 6-22 |
The top six reach the playoffs and the top two get the better playoff seeding. RRQ Tora and AC Esports can win no more than four matches each, so they cannot reach the top six.
What is left to play (Malaysia time)
- Saturday, 17 October: Bigetron MY by Vitality v Team Flash (2.30pm), AC Esports v Team Rey (5pm), Invictus Gaming v Selangor Red Giants (8.15pm)
- Sunday, 18 October: AC Esports v Team Vamos (2.30pm), RRQ Tora v Bigetron MY by Vitality (5pm)
Each of the three leaders has one match left. SRG face the strongest opponent in fourth-placed IG, while Team Rey and Vamos both play bottom side AC Esports. If two or more teams finish level on wins, game difference comes next and then head-to-head results.
The last playoff place is between Bigetron and Flash, who play each other on Saturday. A Bigetron win would knock Flash out. A Flash win would take them to five wins, and Bigetron would then need to beat RRQ Tora on Sunday or rely on game difference.
The playoffs run from 28 October to 1 November at Stadium Juara, Bukit Kiara. The two finalists qualify for the M8 World Championship.
