Indonesia vs Malaysia Preview: Unbeaten Rivals Meet at GBK as Cheng Hoe Urges Harimau Malaya to Embrace the Noise

Malaysia and Indonesia both won their FIFA ASEAN Cup openers. Here's what to know before Monday's Group A showdown at Gelora Bung Karno.

The FIFA ASEAN Cup's biggest Group A fixture arrives on Monday, 28 September, when Harimau Malaya take on hosts Indonesia at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (GBK) in Jakarta. Both teams won their opening matches on Friday, so the winner will take a big step towards the knockout rounds.

How both sides got here

Malaysia opened with a comfortable 3-0 win over Bangladesh, with Arif Aiman scoring twice and debutant Bergson da Silva adding the third. That result puts Malaysia top of the group on goal difference.

Indonesia followed with a 2-0 victory over Singapore at the same stadium later on Friday. According to Malay Mail, Ragnar Oratmangoen opened the scoring in the 13th minute and Ole Romeny converted a penalty in the 74th minute. Singapore played the final 20 minutes with 10 men after Safuwan Baharudin was sent off in the 70th minute.

"Ride the roar"

GBK is one of the most intimidating venues in Asian football, with a capacity of more than 77,000. Rather than fearing it, interim head coach Tan Cheng Hoe wants his players to feed off it.

"Playing against Indonesia at GBK really gives us confidence and excitement... our players really enjoy this kind of atmosphere," Cheng Hoe said, as reported by Malay Mail.

He also warned against complacency after the opening win. "We have to stay focused. We know playing against Indonesia is not going to be an easy game," he said. The 58-year-old added that the Bangladesh result gives his team "confidence and good momentum".

Fitness and recovery the key

With only two full days between matches, recovery is a priority. The Malaysian medical team will assess the players' condition before Cheng Hoe finalises his plan for Monday. After the Bangladesh game, the coach highlighted the physical toll of a 4pm local kick-off, and he also said the team needs to improve in transition and avoid losing the ball too easily.

Recent history at GBK

Malaysian fans will remember both sides of this rivalry. Indonesia won 4-1 the last time the teams met in a group-stage match, at the 2021 AFF Championship. But Malaysia have fond memories of GBK too, having won 3-2 there in a World Cup qualifier in 2019.

What's at stake

A win on Monday would put either side on six points with one group match left. Malaysia's final group game is against Singapore on Thursday, 1 October at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, while Indonesia meet Bangladesh the same day.
