Enric Mas Won on the Alto de Aitana and Now the Vuelta Takes Its First Rest Day With a Spaniard in Red
Stage nine finished with a 187.4km summit finish on Saturday. Mas out-sprinted Oscar Onley and extended his overall lead. Monday is a rest day.
The 81st Vuelta a Espana reached its first rest day on Monday 31 August with Enric Mas in the red jersey and a 1:18 cushion over Primoz Roglic.
Mas took it the hard way. Stage nine ran 187.4km from La Vila Joiosa to a summit finish on the Alto de Aitana, with roughly 5,200 metres of climbing, and the race leader out-sprinted Oscar Onley of Ineos Grenadiers at the line in 5:10:40. Roglic, riding for Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, came in third at 12 seconds. Felix Gall of Decathlon CMA CGM was fourth at 18.
That leaves a general classification with a Movistar rider on top on Spanish roads, which has not been a common sight. Behind Mas sit Roglic at 1:18, Gall at 1:39 and Onley at 2:20, with Mattias Skjelmose, Jarno Widar, Harold Tejada, Richard Carapaz and Santiago Buitrago filling out a top ten that is still close enough to be rearranged by a single bad afternoon.
The shape of the race changed earlier when Tadej Pogacar crashed out. UAE Team Emirates sport director Matxin described him afterwards as "in a bad way," and the cause of the crash has been reported inconsistently - a camera mount and a stone in the road have both been suggested. The team has not settled the question publicly, and it is worth treating the circumstances as unresolved rather than established.
This edition is unusual in geography as well as outcome. The 2026 Vuelta started in Monaco on 22 August and covers 3,310.6km over 21 stages through France, Andorra and Spain before finishing in Granada on 13 September. Twenty-three teams are riding: all eighteen UCI WorldTeams plus five ProTeams.
Twelve stages remain after Monday's rest, including the Andorran and Granadan high country that traditionally decides this race. A 1:18 lead over Roglic is not a comfortable one - Roglic has won this race four times and has built most of those wins in the final week rather than the first.
