MLB Playoff Picture Tightens in August as the Cubs and Red Sox Complete Long Turnarounds

With roughly six weeks of the 2026 regular season left, the division races have split into runaways and coin flips.

Atlanta hold the largest lead in baseball at 8.5 games in the National League East, a swing tied closely to Ronald Acuna Jr.'s return: the Braves are 46-20 with him in the lineup this season and 25-27 without him. The Dodgers sit 7.5 games clear in the West despite injuries and a patchy recent run, and Milwaukee lead the Central with the most wins and the best run differential in the league.

The American League is far tighter. Tampa Bay are 5.5 games up in the East, the White Sox hold a three-game cushion in the Central, and Houston lead the West by a single game with three teams inside four games of each other.

Two turnarounds define the wild card picture. The Red Sox have gone from 14 games under .500 to 11 games over, while the Cubs, ten under in May, are now genuine contenders with Pete Crow-Armstrong in the MVP conversation.
