Vietnam Retain the ASEAN Championship 4-2 on Aggregate After a 2-2 Draw With Thailand in Hanoi
A 2-0 win in the first leg was enough. Thailand drew the return on Wednesday but never closed the gap, and Malaysia had already gone out 4-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals.
Vietnam drew 2-2 with Thailand in the second leg of the ASEAN Championship final in Hanoi on Wednesday 26 August and retained the title 4-2 on aggregate, having won the first leg 2-0. The competition carries a 500,000 US dollar prize and is played under the ASEAN Hyundai Cup name.
How the tournament ran
| Stage | Dates |
|---|---|
| Group stage | 24 July - 8 August |
| Semi-finals | 15-19 August |
| Final, first leg | 22 August |
| Final, second leg | 26 August |
Two legs, home and away, at both knockout stages - a format that rewards a first-leg lead more than most regional tournaments, and Vietnam's 2-0 in the away leg effectively settled it.
Malaysia's exit
Malaysia lost both semi-final legs to Vietnam by 2-0, going out 4-0 on aggregate on 16 and 19 August. It was a semi-final run that ended without a goal against the eventual champions, which is the uncomfortable part of an otherwise respectable campaign.
The next international window is a new competition
The September window is not an ASEAN Championship or an Asian Cup qualifier. It is the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup, with the Premier Division hosted by Indonesia at the Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta and Si Jalak Harupat in Bandung, and a Challenge Division in Hong Kong. Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia are drawn together in Group A. Reported dates and the full group composition are still being confirmed across sources, so treat any published fixture list as provisional until the organisers publish one.
Following it on Playdash
Playdash prices Southeast Asian international football the same way it prices the European leagues - match winner, Asian handicap, over/under, both teams to score, correct score and first goalscorer on every fixture, with aggregate winner and qualification markets on two-legged ties. Tournament outrights open for the FIFA ASEAN Cup as the schedule is confirmed, and regional kick-off times mean live in-play runs in the evening rather than overnight.
Results, aggregate scores and competition details as published by the ASEAN Football Federation and ESPN match records. Individual goalscorers are not stated here as sources conflicted at the time of writing on 27 August 2026.
