Antonelli Started Nineteenth at Monza and Won It, and He Now Leads by Fifty-Nine
Mercedes finished one-two in Italy on Sunday and the next race is at Madring in Madrid on 13 September.
Kimi Antonelli won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on 6 September from nineteenth on the grid, where an engine penalty had put him. He beat his Mercedes team-mate George Russell by 3.857 seconds in a race time of 1:51:15.281. Max Verstappen was third for Red Bull, 14.718 seconds back.
Lando Norris finished fourth, Oscar Piastri fifth and Lewis Hamilton sixth. Pierre Gasly took pole for Alpine and did not make the podium.
Charles Leclerc crashed heavily at Curva Alboreto on lap two and the race was red-flagged and restarted. Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll both retired with mechanical problems.
The race turned on a virtual safety car on lap 26. Antonelli pitted for fresh mediums; Russell stayed out on hards that were going away underneath him. Late on Antonelli ran through the gravel at turn one while attacking his team-mate, recovered, and passed him between the second Lesmo and Ascari. Russell was looked at for a yellow-flag infringement and not penalised.
After twelve rounds Antonelli has 242 points, Russell and Hamilton 183 each, Norris 159 and Leclerc 155. Mercedes lead the constructors on 425 from Ferrari on 338, McLaren on 263 and Red Bull on 186.
