Honor of Kings Silver Gives Malaysia Three Esports Medals at Aichi-Nagoya

Malaysia's Honor of Kings five lost 4-0 to China in the final, but the silver meant three esports medals, including the Gran Turismo gold.

Malaysia's esports players finished the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with three medals after the Honor of Kings team took silver on Monday (28 September).

China won the final 4-0 at Aichi Sky Expo. Captain Lee Han Siang said afterwards that the margin did not reflect how close some of the games were.

The final

Malaysia fielded Chen Tat Yann, Lim Chee Hong, Chong Han Hui, Ryan Na Jie Rong and captain Lee Han Siang. China's line-up was Huang Yaoqin, Wang Ke, Xu Bicheng, Meng Jiajun and He Weijia.

Bernama reported that China, one of the strongest teams in the game, controlled the pace from the start. Utusan Malaysia said China were more organised throughout and gave Malaysia little chance to turn things around.

Earlier on 28 September, Malaysia beat Hong Kong 2-0 in the semi-final to reach the final and guarantee a medal, according to Indonesian data outlet Databoks.

"We needed just a little bit extra"

Lee was disappointed but not discouraged. "I think we could have won because in all four matches, we needed just a little bit extra to beat them," he told Bernama.

He said the defeat came down to technical and strategic gaps. The team will train harder and work on two things: technical skills and competitive strategy. He added that China still hold an edge in the game and that Malaysia had learned a lot from the final. The squad had faced some of the same Chinese players at the Esports World Cup, but not this full line-up.

The silver matched the target the team set before travelling to Japan, both Bernama and Utusan reported.

Three medals from esports

Honor of Kings is Malaysia's third esports medal of the Games:

  • Gold: Taj Izrin Aiman Taj Madira won Gran Turismo 7 on 23 September. It was Malaysia's first Asian Games esports gold and the country's second gold of these Games.
  • Silver: Farish Luzman and Muhammad Hariz Hazmi reached the eFootball final on 23 September.
  • Silver: The Honor of Kings five, 28 September.

Esports counts toward the official medal table at Aichi-Nagoya, so all three medals are part of Malaysia's overall tally.

Why this matters for Malaysian esports

The Asian Games puts esports next to traditional Olympic sports. A gold, two silvers and a team reaching a major final against China is a good return from the multi-sport stage.

Lee's comments suggest the players see the gap to China as small. Future Asian Games esports programmes may change, but the Honor of Kings squad now has experience of an Asian Games final to build on.
