Malaysia Has Qualified for the League of Legends Event at the Asian Games and Japan Reportedly Has Not
Aichi-Nagoya hosts the 2026 Asian Games from 19 September. Esports contributes 13 titles across 11 medal events, with qualifiers already run in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
The 2026 Asian Games open on 19 September at Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya and close on 4 October. Esports is on the programme for the second consecutive edition, and the medal table it contributes to is a substantial one.
The Olympic Council of Asia approved 13 video game titles across 11 medal events on 22 February 2025, after having considered dropping esports from the Games entirely in November 2024. The list: eFootball, Gran Turismo 7, Honor of Kings, Naraka: Bladepoint, Puyo Puyo Champions, Identity V, League of Legends, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Pokemon Unite, PUBG Mobile, and a combined "Competitive Martial Arts" event covering Street Fighter, Tekken and The King of Fighters as a single team medal.
Esports was formally added to the Asian Games calendar on 8 July 2023.
Qualifying tournaments for six of the titles were staged in Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The full per-title qualification picture has not been published in one place, but the League of Legends field is known: eight nations — South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam, Hong Kong, India, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia. South Korea's national side is coached by Kang "Hirai" Dong-hoon.
One detail in that list is doing a lot of work. Malaysia is in an eight-team bracket where the realistic medal contenders are South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Vietnam, which makes a quarter-final draw the difference between going home and playing for bronze. Reporting also suggests host nation Japan will not field a League of Legends team at all, which would be unusual for a host — that claim comes from a single source and has not been independently confirmed.
The OCA has not published exact competition dates for the esports events. Leaguepedia projects the League of Legends tournament for 29 September to 1 October in Aichi, run as a three-day single-elimination bracket with a bronze-medal match, but this is a projection rather than a schedule.
The knock-on effect is already visible in club calendars. MPL Malaysia's Season 18 schedule includes a deliberate break in late September and early October so that players called up to national squads are available. When a regional professional league reschedules around a multi-sport Games, the argument about whether esports belongs there has largely stopped being theoretical.
