WTA Finals 2026: Swiatek Withdraws From Ningbo as Muchova Closes In on the Last Indian Wells Spot

Iga Swiatek's thigh injury leaves Karolina Muchova on the brink of the final WTA Finals place. Marta Kostyuk must go deep in Ningbo to stay alive.

The race for the eighth and final singles place at the 2026 WTA Finals has narrowed to two names. Iga Swiatek withdrew from this week's Ningbo Open on Tuesday with a left thigh injury, leaving Karolina Muchova within touching distance of a spot in Indian Wells without hitting a ball, and Marta Kostyuk as the only player who can still catch her.

Seven already in

The season-ending event runs from 8 to 15 November at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California. It was originally planned for Riyadh, but the WTA moved it to the United States because of safety concerns linked to the conflict involving Iran.

Seven singles players have already qualified: Elena Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka, Mirra Andreeva, Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, Linda Noskova and Elina Svitolina. Svitolina became the seventh on 17 October, helped by titles in Auckland and Rome this season.

The three-way fight becomes two

According to the WTA's 19 October standings, Muchova led the chasing pack on 4,735 Race points, ahead of Swiatek on 4,189 and Kostyuk on 3,920. Muchova is not playing in Ningbo, so she has to wait on results elsewhere.

The WTA set out a simple route for the Czech: if Swiatek failed to reach the Ningbo quarter-finals and Kostyuk failed to reach the final, the last place would be hers. Swiatek's withdrawal has taken care of the first part. The six-time major champion said she had been struggling with "an ongoing problem with my left thigh over the past weeks", and several outlets report she has decided to end her season to recover. She was replaced in the draw by Anastasia Zakharova.

That means Kostyuk is the last player standing between Muchova and Indian Wells.

What Kostyuk needs

The Ukrainian starts her Ningbo campaign on Wednesday evening, scheduled last on Center Court, against Ekaterina Alexandrova, who beat Guo Hanyu 6-2, 6-3 on Tuesday. Alexandrova leads their head-to-head 2-1, but Kostyuk won their most recent meeting 6-3, 6-2 at the US Open in September.

To close an 815-point gap on Muchova, Kostyuk effectively needs to reach the Ningbo final on Sunday 25 October and then win the title at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo the following week, or win Ningbo and reach the Tokyo final. A WTA 500 title is worth 500 points and a final 325, which on paper adds up to just enough. Anything less in Ningbo hands Muchova the place.

Ningbo is in the same time zone as Malaysia, so local fans can follow the evening sessions live. The draw also includes Alexandra Eala, the Philippine star, who meets Diana Shnaider in the second round.

Doubles field taking shape

The WTA also confirmed three more doubles teams on Monday: Guo Hanyu and Kristina Mladenovic, Cristina Bucsa and Nicole Melichar-Martinez, and Elise Mertens and Zhang Shuai. They join Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend and Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani, with three places still open after Aleksandra Krunic and Anna Danilina withdrew because of Krunic's knee injury.
