SEA Games 2027: Malaysian Athletics to stage first dedicated marathon qualifier in April

Malaysian Athletics will hold its first stand-alone marathon trial for the 2027 SEA Games next April, with KL Marathon top-five finishers and time qualifiers eligible.

Malaysia's marathon runners now know how they will earn a place at next year's home SEA Games. Malaysian Athletics (MA) announced on Sunday that it will stage its first dedicated marathon qualifying race in April 2027, with the top finishers to be proposed for selection for the Games, which run from 18 to 29 September 2027.

A new selection race

MA acting president Datuk Wan Hisham Wan Salleh outlined the plan at a briefing at Wisma OCM in Kuala Lumpur. The race will be organised with private event company Dirigo Events and is likely to be held in Putrajaya, possibly on the route planned for the SEA Games marathon itself.

MA intends to make the qualifier a regular fixture, holding it "every two years, in line with the SEA Games cycle," Wan Hisham said. Until now, Malaysia's marathon selection has relied on results from mass-participation races rather than a stand-alone trial.

Who can run

There are two routes into the qualifier. The first is through the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon: the top five Malaysian men and women from the 2025 and 2026 editions are eligible. Those from the 2026 race will also get extra preparation support, including access to National Sports Institute facilities.

The second route is a qualifying time. Other Malaysian runners can enter if they run faster than 2:39:04 for men or 2:59:25 for women in a race measured by World Athletics or AIMS between 1 April 2026 and 30 March 2027.

The top two men and women in the qualifier will be put forward for the SEA Games, with the third-placed runners named as reserves. The Olympic Council of Malaysia has the final say on selection.

The runners already in the frame

The 2026 KL Standard Chartered Marathon on 4 October doubled as a preliminary selection event, and its local winners are on the longlist. Yeow Ni Jia retained the Malaysian men's title in a personal best of 2:33:52, comfortably inside the men's qualifying mark, ahead of Lai Yi Hng (2:34:16) and Tan Huong Leong (2:39:17).

The women's local title went to triathlete and duathlete Esther Joy Chen, 23, who won on her marathon debut in 3:05:22, ahead of Elaine Koon and Lai Wei Ling. Her time is outside the 2:59:25 standard, but her top-five finish already makes her eligible for April's race. Chen has said she wants to represent Malaysia at the Games, while admitting that a second marathon so soon will be a demanding prospect.

Part of a wider build-up

The announcement comes as preparations for the 34th SEA Games pick up pace. The Games will be spread across four clusters in Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Penang and Johor, with about 492 events in 43 sports planned. Organising committee chief executive Datuk Abdul Rashid Yaakub said earlier this month that the final list of sports and events should be confirmed by the end of October or early November.
