National Record, Then Silver: Malaysia's Women Turn Hangzhou Bronze Into Team Sprint Silver
Nurul Izzah Izzati, Anis Amira Rosidi and Nur Alyssa Farid set a national record in qualifying, then took team sprint silver behind China.
Malaysia's women's team sprint trio have improved on their result from the last Asian Games. Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri, Anis Amira Rosidi and Nur Alyssa Farid won silver at Izu Velodrome on 29 September, one place better than the bronze Malaysia won at Hangzhou 2022.
Record first, medal second
The three riders set a new Malaysian record of 48.023 seconds in qualifying. That beat the previous mark of 48.086s, set at the 2025 Asian Track Cycling Championships.
In the final they clocked 48.566s, behind a very fast Chinese team.
The podium
- Gold: China, 45.370s, a new Asian record
- Silver: Malaysia, 48.566s
- Bronze: Chinese Taipei, 49.061s
China's winning time was more than three seconds quicker than anyone else in the field. Malaysia beat Chinese Taipei for silver by about half a second.
Men finish fourth
The men's trio of Muhammad Fadhil Mohd Zonis, Muhammad Ridwan Sahrom and Mohd Akmal Nazimi Jusena finished fourth in 44.341s.
- Gold: China, 42.152s
- Silver: Japan, 42.511s
- Bronze: Hong Kong, China, 43.507s
A step up from Hangzhou
This is the second Asian Games in a row that Malaysia's women have reached the team sprint podium. In Hangzhou they won bronze. In Izu they moved up to silver, and they also lowered the national record along the way, so the improvement shows on the clock as well as in the result.
More to come from the women
The team sprint was the first of several medal chances for Malaysia's women sprinters. A day later, Nurul Izzah Izzati won bronze in the women's keirin and Nur Alyssa finished fifth in the same final. Both are now racing in the individual sprint, which ends with the medal races on Friday, 2 October.
Why it matters
Sprint cycling has been one of Malaysia's strongest Olympic sports, and Azizulhasni Awang has carried most of the attention for years. A national record and a silver medal suggest the women's programme is catching up.
The silver was also one of five Malaysia have won at Aichi-Nagoya. As of this morning the country is 11th on the official medal standings with six golds, five silvers and 12 bronzes. That is already above the pre-Games target of six golds, and the contingent is now trying to equal or beat the national record of nine golds from Guangzhou 2010.
What's next for Malaysia on the track (Malaysia time)
- Thursday 1 October: Azizulhasni Awang in the men's sprint semi-finals from 2pm, with medal races later in the afternoon
- Friday 2 October: men's keirin, plus the closing rounds and medal races of the women's sprint
