PSG Retain the UEFA Super Cup With a 2-1 Win Over Aston Villa in Salzburg

Paris Saint-Germain beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Stadion Salzburg on August 12 to claim back-to-back UEFA Super Cup titles, opening the European season with silverware for the second year running.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put the Champions League holders ahead on 20 minutes and Desire Doue settled the match on 61. Aston Villa, in the fixture for the first time since 1982 after winning the Europa League, had levelled through Bryan Madjo on the stroke of half-time but could not find a second.

The night carried several firsts. It was the first UEFA Super Cup staged in Austria and the first major European final played in Salzburg, at a 30,071-capacity ground that last hosted continental football during UEFA EURO 2008. Somalia's Omar Artan also became the first non-European referee to take charge of the fixture.

There was no extra time on offer under the current format: had the scores been level after 90 minutes, the match would have gone straight to a penalty shoot-out.
