The NFL Moved Cutdown Day to Sunday and About Eleven Hundred Players Will Lose Their Jobs in Forty-Eight Hours
Rosters must be down to 53 by 5pm Central on 30 August, two days earlier in the week than the league's long-standing Tuesday deadline. Waiver claims close the following lunchtime.
The NFL's 53-man roster deadline is 5:00pm Central on Sunday 30 August 2026. That is a change from the traditional Tuesday cutdown day, and it narrows the gap between a team's last preseason look at a player and the moment it has to decide about him.
The deadlines
| Deadline | When |
|---|---|
| Rosters down to 53 | Sun 30 Aug, 5:00pm Central |
| Waiver claims close | Mon 31 Aug, 12:00pm Central |
| Practice squads due | Mon 31 Aug |
Practice squads carry sixteen players. Waiver priority runs in reverse order of last season's standings, so the weakest teams get first refusal on released players before a player's original club can bring him back onto its own practice squad.
Around 1,100 players are expected to be released across the league inside that window.
Names already gone
Cleveland released wide receiver Cedric Tillman. Denver released wide receiver Hakeem Butler. Las Vegas released wide receiver Noah Brown. Arizona waived running back Trey Benson with an injury designation. Miami had made the most cuts of any team at the last update checked, with seven.
Those are early moves. The great majority of the 1,100 will happen between Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
Why the date moved
The compression is the point. Under the old calendar a player could play a final preseason game on a Thursday and wait until the following Tuesday to learn whether he had a job. Sunday at 5pm Central puts the decision immediately after the evidence, and it gives clubs a single Monday to work the waiver wire and rebuild sixteen-man practice squads before the week of the opener.
Following it on Playdash
Playdash prices the NFL season with game lines, spreads and totals, player props, division and conference outrights and Super Bowl futures. Roster week matters to those markets more than it looks: a starting quarterback's backup, an offensive line's depth and a team's returner situation are all decided in it. Kick-offs run in the Southeast Asian morning.
