Jonny Clayton beats Luke Humphries 8-4 to win Swiss Darts Trophy and seal Grand Slam of Darts place

Jonny Clayton beat Luke Humphries 8-4 in Basel to win the Swiss Darts Trophy, his first ranking title of 2026, and book a Grand Slam of Darts place.

Jonny Clayton ended his wait for a ranking title in 2026 on Sunday night, 11 October, beating Luke Humphries 8-4 in the Swiss Darts Trophy final at Basel's St. Jakobshalle. The Welshman pulled clear from 4-4, and the win also booked his place at next month's Grand Slam of Darts. The result follows our Basel coverage from Friday and Saturday, when Michael van Gerwen and defending champion Stephen Bunting went out early.

How the final was won

The final was close for most of the evening. Humphries had the slightly higher average, 101.75 against Clayton's 101.68, according to Dartsnews. Clayton was sharper on the doubles, though, and that decided it. The first break of throw came in the 10th leg, when Clayton took out 26. He then broke Humphries' throw again and finished the match with 46, closing on double 16 to win the last four legs in a row.

Speaking afterwards, Clayton said Humphries' missed doubles had opened the door: "Luke on his doubles gave me the chance."

Sky Sports described the win as Clayton's fourth European Tour title. The winner's cheque in Basel was £35,000, from a total prize fund of £230,000.

Clayton's route through finals night

The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final were all played on Sunday's finals night. Clayton opened by beating the Czech Republic's Karel Sedlacek 6-2 in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals he met Dutch star Gian van Veen and won 7-4 while averaging about 105. A 161 checkout on the bull gave Clayton his first break in that match, and he sealed the win on double four.

Van Veen had needed a final-leg decider to get past Bradley Brooks 6-5 in his quarter-final, having trailed 3-0 early on.

Humphries' run ends one match short

Humphries arrived in Basel as the top seed and looked the man to beat. He beat Spain's Cristo Reyes 6-3 in the quarter-finals and then produced the standout performance of the tournament in the semi-finals, averaging 111.17 in a 7-4 win over Mensur Suljovic.

Suljovic deserves a mention as well. The Austrian thrashed Dirk van Duijvenbode 6-1 to reach his first European Tour semi-final since 2021, before running into Humphries at his best.

What comes next

The title matters beyond the trophy. Clayton is now confirmed for the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton, which runs from 14 to 22 November. After that, the PDC World Championship at Alexandra Palace starts on 11 December and runs to 3 January.

For fans in Malaysia, European Tour finals usually start in the small hours of Monday morning local time, because Basel is six hours behind Malaysia in October. The Grand Slam evening sessions will run on a similar overnight schedule.
