Joao Fonseca Withdrew From the Asian Swing Including Tokyo and Shanghai After an Injury-Hit Season
The twenty-year-old Brazilian said he needed to give his mind and body a break, and plans to return in Europe to defend his Swiss Indoors title in October.
Brazilian tennis player Joao Fonseca announced on 22 September 2026 that he will skip the ATP Tour's Asian swing, withdrawing from the ATP 500 event in Tokyo and the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai.
The 20-year-old has endured an injury-hit season, including an abdominal problem that forced him out of the US Open. He also withdrew from the third round in Cincinnati earlier in the summer.
In a statement posted on Instagram, Fonseca said: "2026 has been a very challenging year for me. On top of everything the profession demands, a series of injuries ended up taking me out of important tournaments." He added that after speaking with his team, the best decision was to listen to his body and give his mind and body a break.
Fonseca, currently ranked No. 28, holds a 20-13 win-loss record this season. His highlights include a first Masters 1000 quarter-final in Monte-Carlo and a first major quarter-final at Roland Garros. He returned to action for Brazil in the Davis Cup, beating Dominic Stricker as Brazil defeated Switzerland 3-1.
It is the second straight year Fonseca has missed the Asian events. He is expected to return when the tour moves back to Europe in October, including a title defence at the Swiss Indoors in Basel.
