Alexandra Eala Becomes First Filipino to Win a WTA Singles Title

Alexandra Eala became the first Filipino player to win a WTA singles title, beating top seed Jessica Pegula in a rain-delayed Washington Open final that was pushed from Sunday to Monday.

Pegula took the first set 6-4, but Eala fought back to win the second before racing through the decider 6-0 as the American, who had won the title in 2019 and 2021, could only manage three more games.

The 21-year-old's victory extends her winning streak against top-10 opponents to five matches, following wins over Elena Rybakina, Elina Svitolina twice and Iga Swiatek, and will lift her from 28th to a career-high 20th in the world rankings.

"I feel so much love," Eala said afterward. "I knew whatever happened, this match would have already been a win for me... I've achieved this milestone for my career." In the men's final, third seed Taylor Fritz beat 19-year-old Rafael Jodar for his 11th ATP title.

Eala's breakthrough run and rapid rise up the rankings make her a name to watch on Playdash's WTA outright and tournament-winner markets heading into the North American hard-court swing.
