Drone Soccer Is Five a Side Through a Hoop in Three-Minute Sets and Thirty Thousand American Schoolchildren Already Play It
A caged drone, a goalkeeper, two defenders and a striker. The sport has a federation, a million-dollar world cup, an Incheon intercontinental event and a Hong Kong open, and it is being taught as engineering.
Drone soccer is played five against five with caged drones flown through aerial hoops, in three sets of three minutes. The positions borrow from quadball: one goalkeeper, two defenders, one outfield player and a striker. Two referees officiate from opposite sides of the arena.

The competitive calendar
The 2026 FIDA Intercontinental Cup was held at Songdo Convensia in Incheon, South Korea from 15 to 17 July, with more than twenty nations expected. The programme covered Class 40 and Class 20 national team events, a Class 20 Club Challenge for international clubs and a Super Pilot All-Star Match, with prize money attached to the Club Challenge and awards presented by the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport alongside Incheon Metropolitan City and FIDA. The third FIDA General Assembly met during the event.
A separate FAI-sanctioned Hong Kong Open Drone Soccer Championship was staged from 21 to 23 August 2026.
A world championship carrying a reported million-dollar prize has drawn something in the order of two thousand teams competing for around thirty spots.
Why it is growing where it is growing
Thirty thousand American students are involved at various levels, and participants receive certificates usable for employment. Korea is the other centre of the sport, which is not a coincidence given where the hardware and the federation come from.
The recruitment argument is engineering rather than sport. A drone soccer team has to build, tune and repair its own aircraft, and the sport is being sold to schools as applied STEM with a scoreboard attached. That is a considerably easier sell to a school budget than a new ball game.
