Le Storte Won the Palio di Castel del Piano With Diego Minucci on Espu and Took the Five Thousand Euro Prize
The contrada had already won the first heat before taking the race itself on the Nativity of the Virgin, the palio's traditional date.
The Palio di Castel del Piano was run on 8 September 2026, the Nativity of the Virgin and the palio's traditional date, in the Monte Amiata town of Castel del Piano in the province of Grosseto.
The contrada of Le Storte won, with the jockey Diego Minucci riding the horse Espu. Le Storte had also won the first prova, or heat, before the race itself.
The prize is 5,000 euros together with the drappellone, the painted banner awarded to the winning contrada. The 2026 banner was the work of the Sienese artist Silvia Gasparrini, who used a medieval-inspired iconographic style.
The supporting Memorial Gastone Pioli was won by the horse Turco.
