Eddie Dunbar Caught Santiago Buitrago Inside the Final Kilometre on Penas Blancas as Enric Mas Kept the Red Jersey
The Irishman took his third career Vuelta stage win on the summit finish above Estepona, while Mas held a lead of one minute thirty-seven over Primoz Roglic.
Stage nineteen of the 2026 Vuelta a Espana ran from Velez-Malaga to the summit of the Alto de Penas Blancas on Friday 11 September. A sixteen-rider breakaway went clear on the Puerto del Viento, and Richard Carapaz attacked alone with ninety-five kilometres remaining.
Santiago Buitrago accelerated with thirteen kilometres to go and looked to have the stage won, but Eddie Dunbar closed a gap of around ten seconds inside the final kilometre, caught the Colombian and went past. It was Dunbar's third career stage win at the Vuelta. Buitrago was second and Thomas Gloag third.
Enric Mas of Movistar finished the day still in the red jersey on 65 hours 52 minutes 3 seconds. Primoz Roglic of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe is second at 1:37, Felix Gall of Decathlon-CMA CGM third at 3:01, Carapaz fourth at 5:17 and Oscar Onley fifth at 6:03.
Wout van Aert leads the points classification on 306, Buitrago the mountains on 78 and Onley the young rider standings. The race, which began on 22 August, finishes on 13 September, leaving Mas two stages from a first Grand Tour victory.
