Grant Forrest birdies the last to win Open de España by one and earn 2027 Masters and Open invitations

Scotland's Grant Forrest won the Open de España in Madrid at 14 under, a shot clear of Eugenio Chacarra, to earn invitations to the Masters and the Open.

Scotland's Grant Forrest won the Open de España in Madrid on Sunday, 11 October, birdying the final hole to finish at 14 under par and beat home favourite Eugenio Chacarra by one shot. The victory, his third on the DP World Tour, also brings invitations to the 2027 Masters at Augusta National and the 155th Open Championship at St Andrews.

A birdie at the last to settle it

Forrest, 33, began the final round sharing the lead with England's Joe Dean, and the title was still open when he reached the 18th at Real Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

Chacarra had set the target in front of him. The Spaniard played the front nine in five under, dropped a shot at the 17th after finding a greenside bunker, and then birdied the last to post 13 under. Golf Monthly reported that he played the closing round with a broken toe.

Forrest needed a birdie to win outright. He missed the green at the front but chipped to just inside four feet and holed the putt. "I'm in shock. Pure shock," he said afterwards.

Contenders fall away late

Several other challengers had chances to make it a play-off. Denmark's Jacob Skov Olesen bogeyed the 17th and missed out on 12 under, while Dean dropped a shot at the 16th and finished further back. England's Dan Brown had earlier set a clubhouse mark at 11 under after a fast final round, and South Africa's Thriston Lawrence also went low with a 65.

Sweden's Ludvig Åberg recovered from bogeys at his first two holes to climb back into the top 10, and Ireland's Shane Lowry also finished strongly.

From four missed cuts to two major invitations

The win came out of nowhere on form. Forrest had missed his previous four cuts and arrived in Madrid ranked 118th on the Race to Dubai.

According to the DP World Tour, it was his first tour title outside Scotland. His previous victories came at the 2021 Hero Open and the 2025 Nexo Championship, both on home soil. He has played the Open twice before, but the trip to Augusta in April will be his first Masters.

What comes next on the DP World Tour

The win gives Forrest valuable Race to Dubai points late in the season, as the tour heads towards its closing events. At the top of the rankings, Golf Monthly noted that the season-long battle between Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed continues.
