MPL MY Season 18: Team Rey beat Team Vamos 4-2 to book M8 spot and face SRG in grand final
Team Rey beat Team Vamos 4-2 in the MPL MY S18 lower bracket final to qualify for M8 and set up a grand final rematch with SRG on Sunday at 5.30pm.
Team Rey are in the MPL Malaysia Season 18 grand final and have qualified for the M8 World Championship. They beat Team Vamos 4-2 in a best-of-seven lower bracket final at Stadium Juara, Bukit Kiara, on Saturday, 31 October. Their opponents in today's final are Selangor Red Giants (SRG), who beat Team Rey 3-0 in the upper bracket final the day before. The grand final starts at 5.30pm Malaysia time on Sunday, 1 November.
How Team Rey won the decider
Team Vamos took Game 1 in about 22 minutes, but Team Rey won Games 2 and 3 to lead 2-1. Vamos levelled the series at 2-2 in Game 4. Team Rey then won the last two games, finishing Game 6 in under 11 minutes.
These teams had already met earlier in the playoffs. Team Rey also beat Team Vamos in the upper bracket semi-final on 29 October, which pushed Vamos into the lower bracket. Vamos fought back through the lower half but could not beat the same opponent a second time. Their elimination means Vamos miss out on the M8 World Championship.
SRG chase a sixth straight title
SRG go into the final as heavy favourites on form. They finished the double round-robin regular season on top with an 11-3 match record. Team Rey and Team Vamos both finished 10-4. In the playoffs SRG have not dropped a game yet. They swept Bigetron MY by VIT 3-0 in the upper bracket semi-final and Team Rey 3-0 in the upper bracket final.
The Red Giants won MPL MY Season 17 in June, their fifth domestic title in a row and the first time any team had done that in the league. Winning tonight would make it six straight. Team Rey need a quick turnaround, having played a long series on Saturday, and they need to find answers to a team that beat them comfortably two days ago.
M8 places already decided
MPL MY Season 18 sends two teams to the M8 World Championship in Istanbul, Turkiye, and both go to the grand finalists. SRG secured their place by reaching the final through the upper bracket. Team Rey have now taken the second one, so the grand final is purely for the domestic title and Malaysia's top seed going into M8.
