Dragon Ranger Gaming have secured their place in VCT China for 2027. DRG swept Nova Esports 3-0 in the best-of-five Week 1 grand final of the VCT China Threshold on Sunday, 25 October, at THE HUB Performing Arts Center in Shanghai, claiming the first of two guest-team places on offer. The final began at 5pm Shanghai time, which is also Malaysia time.
A one-sided final
DRG controlled the series from start to finish. They took their own map pick, Summit, 13-8, dismantled Nova on Nova's choice of Split 13-3, and closed the series 13-9 on Lotus, their second pick.
SpiritZ1 led the scoreboard for DRG with an average combat score of 297 across the series, ahead of team-mate Flex1n on 272. Nova's best performer was Ezeir, who averaged 262 and posted the highest single-map figure of the final, 347 on Split, in a losing cause.
DRG's route through Week 1
The Threshold brought together 12 teams in Shanghai, and DRG had to win four series to take the title. They opened with a 2-0 win over Rare Atom in the round of 12, then came through the toughest test of their run in the quarter-finals against FunPlus Phoenix. DRG won the first map 18-16 in overtime, FPX levelled the series, and DRG won the deciding map. A 2-0 semi-final win over Titan Esports Club followed.
Nova reached the final by beating Any Questions Gaming 2-1 in the quarter-finals and KeepBest Gaming 2-0 in the semi-finals, but had no answer on the final day.
Why the Threshold matters
The tournament is a direct consequence of Riot reducing the number of partnered organisations in VCT China from ten to eight for the 2027-28 cycle. DRG, Nova, FPX, Titan and Wolves Esports were among the teams not renewed, which made the Threshold the route back into top-flight Chinese Valorant.
As a guest team, DRG receive direct invitations to the 2027 China Kickoff and the league's two Cup events. Sheep Esports reports it will be DRG's fourth consecutive VCT season, beginning at Kickoff in Hangzhou in January.
One slot left in Week 2
The Threshold's second week runs from 27 October to 1 November in Shanghai, and it will decide who takes the last guest place for 2027. As Sheep Esports put it, "one final slot is up for grabs." Nova will be among the teams aiming to bounce back after Sunday's defeat.
