Jakob Ingebrigtsen Came Back From Achilles Surgery to Win the Ultimate Five Thousand Metres With a Last Hundred of Twelve Point Six
The Norwegian ran 12:59.24 in Budapest seven months after surgery, holding off Cole Hocker and Parker Wolfe in an American-dominated field.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen underwent surgery on his Achilles in February 2026. His brother and coach Henrik has described the pain in the preceding year as so severe that Jakob could not tolerate wearing socks. The 5000m at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest on 11 September was the clearest evidence yet that the problem is behind him.
Ingebrigtsen sat fifth for most of the race before moving with 100 metres remaining. He covered that final stretch in 12.60 seconds and crossed in 12:59.24, the second-fastest time of his career.
Cole Hocker of the United States took second in 13:00.05 and his compatriot Parker Wolfe third in 13:00.13. American runners filled five of the top seven places.
Ingebrigtsen said that while injured he had feared the worst and did not know whether he would be able to run at all, let alone at this level, calling the result amazing. Hocker said that being on the podium meant he was capable of winning and that he was a little disappointed.
